RMHC All Star
Karin Usewicz has been dedicated to the mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities since before the foundation of the Ronald McDonald House was poured. In the early '80s Karin was an active member of Neo-Fight, an organization dedicated to helping families experiencing a perinatal crisis. Initially, Karin and her fellow New-Fight members were interested in obtaining an apartment for families of premature babies. Things really took off from there.

Karin became a member of the Ronald McDonald House Board of Directors in 1982. This hands-on group raised funds, consulted with architects and helped build and decorate the Ronald McDonald House of Mid-Missouri. Karin chaired the Landscaping Committee and the Interior Design Committee. She also served on the committee that oversaw the construction of the House. Once built, Karin worked diligently painting and landscaping to beautify the property for visiting families.

After 19 years of serving on the Board of Directors, Karin has watched the organization grow. When asked why she sticks with it, Karin answered, "For the love of the House!" She explained that it was important to keep forging ahead. Karin serves as a wonderful link to the past. By having a great depth of experience, she has a unique perspective in that she has witnessed what works and what doesn't work relating to RMHC projects and is able to help steer decisions that affect the organization accordingly.

Karin's caring and generosity has made a positive difference in the lives of thousands of families of hospitalized children from all over the world. It is simply impossible to quantify the impact of her work and tenacious dedication to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mid-Missouri.

A Success Story: 2002 Ronald McDonald House Charities Golf Tournament
On a sunny day in June, teams from throughout the state came to compete in the fourth annual Ronald McDonald House Charities Golf Tournament. Columbia Country Club played host for this fabulous event that raised over $22,500 for the Charity.

The success of the tournament was due to the generosity of our Gold Sponsors KMIZ, McDonald's and Socket as well as our Bronze Sponsors Holiday Inn Select, Joe Machens Ford and UMB Bank. Many other sponsors, donors and volunteers donated their time, energies and resources to help the families of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mid-Missouri.

Congratulations to our trophy winners Ron Phillips, Bill Dall, Sr., Bill Dall, Jr. and Al Green from the Coca-Cola team.

A Summer Greeting from Mary Ebert
A Summer Hello,

What a fun time of the year summer can be! With time to go swimming, picnicking, hiking and all of those memorable family activities, it is difficult to think of spending this time in the confines of a hospital, but that is exactly what the parents of families of seriously ill or injured children must face. Illness and tragedy never take a vacation and so the doors of the Ronald McDonald House of Mid-Missouri are open every day of the year to provide a "home-away-from-home" for these families.

I am the mother of a child with serious medical difficulties and remember seeing the fireworks on the 4th of July from a hospital room and spending that summer far from home. My husband and I were given the privilege of staying at a Ronald McDonald House. With a clean room, a comfortable bed, food to eat, and the fellowship of others who know exactly what we were experiencing, we made it through that summer. The "House" became our oasis and our refuge.

The generosity of people just like you make it possible for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mid-Missouri's to continue its mission to "lift children and families to a better tomorrow." Due to the terrifying events of September 11th, the problems facing corporate America, and the general lack of economic confidence, our monetary resources have become depleted. I would like to take this opportunity to ask for your help in contributing whatever you can to make a difference in the life of a sick child. The summer you spend with your family will be so enriched because of what you have provided for a family in need.

My husband and I never though we would be spending our vacation at a hospital caring for our son. We never thought that our vacation hotel would be a Ronald McDonald House. We never thought that we would be so grateful to those who helped us through that summer.

Please help us help others through your generous contribution.

Thank you.
Mary
Parent
President, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mid-Missouri

Families from Far Away
Things around Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) have really been hopping this summer! We have had families stay with us from far away places including New York, Texas, Tennessee...even Spain! Columbia, MO is very fortunate to be the home to outstanding medical facilities that draw families from all over the state, the country and the world. Thanks to the support of wonderful individuals, businesses and organizations we are able to help thousands of families find comfort and shelter while their children are receiving medical treatment for illnesses or injuries.

As a nation we are experiencing a unique time in our history. We are able to remain strong because within communities throughout the nation friends and families, as well as perfect strangers, are reaching out to help those in need. Some people make financial contributions while others choose to give of their time and efforts to better the circumstances of others. This is what makes our nation great! We would like to invite you to become a hero to the families of RMHC. The following are just a few ideas as to how you can become involved.

Be a Hero!

Host a fund raiser to benefit RMHC
Groups of caring people from throughout the Mid-Missouri area have come together to organize events to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities. Car washes, auctions, balloon launches, "Wish List Showers" and car shows are just a sampling of the events that individuals and groups have hosted. These events are fun to put together and benefit families much like your own. Contact Amanda at (573) 817-1747 to discuss your idea or for more information about hosting an event for RMHC. (All events that benefit RMHC must receive prior approval from the organization.)

Become a Community Liaison
Many of the families served by RMHC of Mid-Missouri come to us from a 13 county area within the state. In an attempt to raise awareness in these counties, we are putting a call out for individuals from these communities to become a Ronald McDonald House Charities Community Liaison. These special volunteers will work with RMHC staff and fellow volunteers to keep their community up-to-date on RMHC news, projects and current events. They will serve as a lifeline between Ronald McDonald House Charities and their home community. If this interests you, please contact Amanda at (573) 817-1747.

Become a Volunteer
Ronald McDonald House Charities' (RMHC) volunteers find their work both rewarding and fulfilling. Leslie Garber, Volunteer Coordinator for RMHC, works closely with volunteers to find out where their interests and talents lie and then matches them with tasks that need to be performed throughout the organization. Some volunteers work several times a week, while others volunteer on an as-needed basis such as when RMHC events come along. The following are where our greatest volunteer needs currently lie:

  • We are currently working on enhancing the RMHC Speakers Bureau. After comprehensive training, members of this group will visit with community and civic groups about the mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities and how it is fulfilled. This is a fun activity for vivacious and outgoing individuals who enjoy meeting and interacting with members of the community.
  • We are also continuing to build our team of volunteers to work at the Ronald McDonald House and at one of our two Ronald McDonald Family Room locations.

Call (573) 443-7666 to find out more about becoming a RMHC volunteer!

Words from Ronald McDonald House Family Room Volunteers
Donna Hennigh says, "I enjoy being a volunteer at the new Ronald McDonald Family Room at Boone Hospital. The use of the room is increasing as more families become familiar with the facilities available to them. The Room is a wonderful place for guests to relax and take a quiet break."

Diane Prather says, "The Family Room is a beautiful addition to Boone Hospital. The families who come in are so appreciative of a quiet, comfortable place to rest and regenerate without having to leave the hospital."

Jo Ladwig says, "Visitors have mentioned how much they appreciate the quiet atmosphere of the new Family Room at Boone Hospital. The Room serves the purpose of giving families a beautiful home-like environment."

Making a Difference!
Karis Crosby and Shelby Hermann are two very special young ladies. Upset when an eight-year-old friend had to battle leukemia; they knew they had to do something to help. This is how "Kids Cure for Cancer" came about. KCC, as they refer to their organization, works to alleviate the stress of children with cancer. Not only do the girls raise money to help children with cancer, they provide them with fun activity booklets and other tokens to help take their minds off of things. Karis explained, "A lot of kids with cancer are lonely and scared. We make up activity sheets, puzzles, and sometimes include pieces of candy!" KCC even utilizes computer software that allows them to design and print coloring pages that they include in their booklets.

Recently Karis and Shelby presented Ronald McDonald House Charities Mid-Missouri with a donation of $62.25 to help children and families who have children with cancer. Every year we host many families who have children with cancer. Karis and Shelby's gift will go a long way to helping make these special families feel better by providing them with a home-away-from-home.

They are another great example of how kids really can make a positive difference in the lives of others!

Members of Leadership Columbia, Class of 2002, worked to beautify the grounds of the Ronald McDonald House and made a sizeable monetary contribution to help families of hospitalized children.

A Few Words From RMHC Families...
"The Ronald McDonald House is great. It's so nice to be able to stay in a nice cozy place where you can rest and keep strong for your child."

"We have been visiting the Ronald McDonald House since 1995 when my son had to be delivered early. It has truly become our home-away-from-home."

Spring 2002
Grand Opening of Ronald McDonald Family Room
Inclement weather couldn't dampen the festivities when Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mid-Missouri (RMHC) opened its newest Ronald McDonald Family Room at Boone Hospital Center. An Open House was held the morning of February 26th to welcome guests into the new facility. So many friends and supporters came that there was only room to stand. RMHC Board of Directors President, Mary Ebert and members of the Columbia Chamber of Commerce took part in a ribbon cutting ceremony signaling the official opening of the Ronald McDonald Family Room. They were joined by representatives of Boone Hospital Center and Ronald McDonald.

The Ronald McDonald Family Room at Boone Hospital Center offers families of hospitalized children an escape from the hospital atmosphere. This 1,200 square foot facility offers guests a comfortable sitting area, stocked kitchenette, bathroom with shower facility, and a privacy room where families can retreat if they need to have time to themselves.

Ronald McDonald House Charities is fortunate to have two such facilities in Columbia. The area's first Family Room was opened at University Hospital's Children's Hospital. During its first month of operation it welcomed over 1,200 visitors through its doors. This had been the expected usage estimate for the entire first year. The new Ronald McDonald Family Room at Boone Hospital Center has been warmly received as well. How to become involved with the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Boone Hospital Center

Although the room is now open, we still need volunteers to staff the facility and serve the families who need our help. The Ronald McDonald Family Room is entirely dependent upon volunteer participation. The Family Room cannot be open for families without a volunteer present, so we must fill all positions immediately. Our greatest need for volunteers is during our weekend shifts, which are 3-4 hours on one Saturday or Sunday per month. Ronald McDonald Family Room volunteers will serve as host/hostess to the room and will receive comprehensive training before their first shift.

You may also choose to make a financial contribution to the project. To date we have raised approximately one-half of the cost of the facility. All donations will be warmly received and those over $250 will become a permanent part of our recognition wall.

If you are interested in making a contribution, please contact Amanda at (573) 817-1747.

Spelling Bee Success
The 2002 Ronald McDonald House Charities Spelling Bee, sponsored by Isle of Capri Casino, was a great success! Great fun was had by all as spellers representing local businesses battled it out to see who would take home the coveted RMHC Spelling Bee trophy. With the help of supporters and friends throughout the Mid-Missouri region, we were able to raise $17,400 to benefit the families of hospitalized children.

It was difficult to tell which competition was more fierce...the competition for spelling champ, or the competition for team spirit. In the end the McDonald's team, represented by students from Jefferson City High School, proved the victorious spellers. In a well fought cheering battle the KLIK team, represented by students from Blair Oaks High School, was awarded the prize for best spirit.

The success of this event was due to the generosity of Isle of Capri Casino, our title sponsor, Boone County National Bank, Capital Plaza Hotel, Capital Region Medical Center, Jefferson Bank, KLIK, KRCG, McDonald's of Mid-Missouri, Missouri Employers Mutual Insurance, and to all of the other sponsors, donors and volunteers who gave of their energies and resources to help the families of Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Like Father, Like Son
Since 1999, Will Green has been volunteering with Ronald McDonald House Charities. By profession Will serves the community as a Police Officer with the Columbia Police Department. While off duty, Will gives of his valuable time by bringing milk to the Ronald McDonald House from the Central Missouri Food Bank. Will says, "Helping others makes me feel good!"

Recently Will began bringing his son, Joshua, to assist him with his volunteer efforts. Will is setting a great example for his son and said he "likes it when Joshua sees Daddy doing volunteer work."

Will and Joshua make a real difference to thousands of families every year and are a tremendous help to the staff of Ronald McDonald House Charities. Nearly all of the families who stay at the Ronald McDonald House or use a Ronald McDonald Family Room benefit from the milk they deliver. Volunteers use the milk in baked goods that are enjoyed by all, while others use the milk in their morning cereal or coffee. It's amazing how the simple act of delivering the milk can touch the lives of so many.

Talk About a Tough Decision!
Volunteers are truly the heart of the operation at Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). Caring people give of their time and talents on an individual basis and sometimes as part of a group. Volunteers serve on our Board of Directors and various committees, give of their time at our Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, and help keep the Ronald McDonald House clean and comfortable for families who stay with us. This is a mere sampling of the wonderful things that our volunteers do for us.

This year staff members of Ronald McDonald House Charities were given the opportunity to nominate a few volunteers to receive a 2002 HERO Award, presented by the Voluntary Action Center.

There were three categories in which volunteers could be entered - Youth, Group, and Individual. Staff members had the bittersweet task of choosing only a few of our fabulous volunteers to nominate.

Andrew McCarney was nominated in the Youth category for sharing his birthday with Ronald McDonald House Charities. For the past two years, Andrew has included a copy of the RMHC Wish List along with his birthday party invitations. Guests were encouraged to bring an item from the Wish List in lieu of a gift for Andrew. By having such a large number of friends, Andrew was able to present RMHC with enough food and paper items to provide comfort and nourishment to families of hospitalized children for more than a month.

Members of Hickman High School's Community Life Skills Class were nominated in the Group category. These special individuals are learning skills that they can use after graduation. They do a wonderful job keeping the Ronald McDonald House clean and sparkling for our guests.

Sarah Hill was one of our nominees in the individual category. Sarah was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority and became involved with Ronald McDonald House Charities while in college. While her journalism career blossomed, Sarah continued to volunteer with Ronald McDonald House Charities by serving on the Board of Directors and several RMHC committees. Sarah has recently become an Emeritus Director and continues to volunteer her time at the Ronald McDonald Family Room at University Hospital's Children's Hospital. She also serves on several RMHC committees.

Since 1999, Molly Remer has been a RMHC volunteer. Molly is a very special young woman who graduated from the University of Missouri - Rolla at the tender age of 19 and earned her Masters degree in Social Work at 21. She is a very energetic volunteer who gives of her time at both Ronald McDonald Family Room locations as well as at the Ronald McDonald House. Molly faces everyday with a bright smile and, as so many of our volunteers do, adds a wonderful upbeat spirit whenever she is present.

Fall 2001
Family Room Groundbreaking Ceremony - A Great Success!
Mid-Missouri received relief from a long hot dry spell the day of the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new Ronald McDonald Family Room at Boone Hospital Center. It rained mercilessly. Magically, however, when it was time for the Groundbreaking Ceremony to begin, the rain took pause as RMHC Board Member Sarah Hill began the proceedings. Remarks were made by Barbara Weaver, Chairperson of the Boone Hospital Center Board of Trustees, Mike Shirk, President and Senior Executive Officer of Boone Hospital Center, and Dr. Tim O'Conner, RMHC Board Member and Neonatologist at Boone Hospital Center.

Guests cheered as the Groundbreaking was led by dozens of children whose parents are employees of Boone Hospital Center. The kids dug with great abandon and seemed to have an extra good time due to the fact that it was so muddy out.

Ronald McDonald Family Rooms are special places where families of hospitalized children can go to escape from the hospital atmosphere while being only a moment away from their child's bedside. These special places provide families with a comfortable family room, stocked kitchenette, shower and toilet facilities, and a privacy room where they can have time to themselves.

All donations will be recognized and those over $250 will become a permanent part of our recognition wall.

If you are interested in making a contribution, please contact Amanda at (573) 817-1747.

Day of Caring
September 21 was the 2001 United Way Day of Caring. Led by seasoned RMHC volunteer Marge Barbero, generous individuals from House of Brokers and Toastmaster worked throughout the day to make the outdoor gardens and recreation areas at the House a more pleasant place for the families of Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Local Artist Beautifies Ronald McDonald House
Artist Peggy Guest, of Fayette, Missouri, gave of her time and talents to help make the Ronald McDonald House a more beautiful place for families of hospitalized children. Guest painted a whimsical floor-to-ceiling mural in the House's dining room that depicts mice playing in "their kitchen" at night. The mural is not only beautiful to view, but when one takes the time to closely examine it, he or she will enter a world of wonder full of hidden scenes and stories. The characters appear to be so animated that it seems as if they might actually come to life. Peggy even invited spectators to join in the painting!

All in the Family
You can just tell they're sisters by looking at their smiles...but that is not all that Shasta Johnson and big sister Molly Remer have in common. Both find great satisfaction in giving of their time and efforts to help others. Molly has been a volunteer for Ronald McDonald House Charities since December of 2000. One day, while volunteering at the Ronald McDonald Family Room at University Hospital's Children's Hospital, she decided to bring her 11-year-old sister in to help her. Shasta got to see how Molly was able to help other people and enthusiastically thought of a way that she could get involved. Shasta decided to use tab boxes to collect change instead of tabs. She donates a portion of her monthly allowance, and sits the boxes in strategic areas around her house. So far this young hero has raised $150.06 that will be used to purchase snack foods for families who use the Ronald McDonald Family Room. Shasta is another great example of how young people can be heroes to others.

Everyone's a Winner!
Jean Rathgeb and members of the Boone Hospital Auxiliary organized a drawing to raise funds for the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Boone Hospital Center. The cumulative value for the prizes was $1,500. Participants had the chance to win a handmade quilt, DVD player, one year supply of McDonald's Extra Value Meals, mountain bike, gasoline gift certificates, or grocery gift certificates. Donors included Mary Palmatary, D&M Sound, McDonald's of Columbia, Coca-Cola, MFA Oil, and Gerbes Supermarket. This project raised over $3,000 for the Family Room project.

A Note From Ruth McInnis...
"I have been so appreciative of my stay at the Ronald McDonald House with my son Owen. Being at the Ronald McDonald House was superior to a hotel environment! I felt like I was part of a caring community, surrounded by families attending to their loved ones just as I was. The playroom environment was the best! Owen had a great time playing with all the toys and I found it very easy to relax and unwind there. Thank you to all the Ronald McDonald House staff and contributors who provide such a wonderful facility to those in need. I will never forget your generosity." - Ruth McInnis

Missouri Cares
Caring individuals from throughout the Mid-Missouri have come up with some very creative ways to support Ronald McDonald House Charities. Here are just a few examples...

  • Led by Laurie Thompson of the MANSCEN Coffee Group, Fort Leonard Wood's White Auction raised $3,026 for RMHC.
  • PEO Chapter MJ, of Boonville, Missouri threw a "Wish List Shower" for RMHC. They donated at least one of nearly every Wish List item on our list.
  • In its ninth year, Jefferson City's Missouri Boulevard Touchless Carwash raised a record $1,100 for RMHC.

Thanks for the Memories...A Good Friend Says Good-Bye!
On September 14, RMHC said farewell to a dear friend. Janet Turnbull has been with Ronald McDonald House Charities for over five years. She began her involvement as a volunteer at Columbia's Ronald McDonald House. Soon afterward, she and her family moved into the Resident Manager's apartment and Janet became the Resident Evening Manager. Eventually Janet took on the responsibilities of House Manager and Volunteer Coordinator. Executive Director Barbara Fitzgerald says, "Janet was very dedicated to providing a home-like atmosphere to families." Janet's patience, caring, and dedication has benefited thousands of families as well as her co-workers and RMHC volunteers.

September 11, 2001
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mid-Missouri would like to extend our deepest sympathy to those who were affected by the events that took place on September 11th. Our thoughts and prayers are with those whose lives were forever changed that day.

Summer 2001
New Ronald McDonald Family Room Planned for Second Mid-Missouri Hospital
Groundbreaking for Columbia's newest Ronald McDonald Family Room will take place this July! This room will serve families of hospitalized children at Boone Hospital Center and will be a welcome addition to the comprehensive care offered by the hospital staff.

What exactly is a Ronald McDonald Family Room? Ronald McDonald Family Rooms are special places where families of hospitalized children can go to escape the hospital atmosphere while at the same time being only a moment away from their child's bedside. These special places provide families with a comfortable family room, a stocked kitchenette, shower and toilet facilities, and a privacy room that can double as an emergency sleeping area.

Public hospital waiting areas are often crowded, noisy and not terribly comfortable. These factors do nothing to alleviate the stress that family members of hospitalized children are already feeling. They are often tired, scared, and unsure about what the future may bring.

When a family enters a Family Room, they are greeted by a volunteer who acts as host or hostess for the room. This volunteer will explain what services are available and help make the family feel at home. In the main sitting area in the Family Room, there will be several semi-private groupings of furniture so that multiple families may come in and have space for themselves. In the kitchen they will find a wide variety of light snacks and beverages to help them refuel. There is always a supply of fresh clean towels and washcloths that families can use after a refreshing shower. Thanks to the generosity of our volunteers and donors, all of these goods and services are provided to families at no cost!

The Ronald McDonald Family Room at University Hospital's Children's Hospital received over 1,000 visits during its first month of operation. This had been the projected usage estimate for the entire first year of use.

The estimated cost of the Family Room project at Bone Hospital Center is $300,000 which includes the cost of construction and interior furnishings. Ronald McDonald House Charities is financially responsible for the interior furnishings of the facility while Boone Hospital Center is responsible for the cost of construction. For accounting purposes, all gifts must be specifically directed to the non-profit organization of your choice.

We still have a long way to go and need your help! All donations will be recognized and those in excess of $250 will become a permanent part of our recognition wall.

If you are interested in donating towards this Ronald McDonald Family Room or would like more information about the project, please contact us at (573) 443-7666.

A Very Special Gift
Late last year we received news that Carol Kimball and Family would be donating a house to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mid-Missouri. What a creative and generous way to support the Charity that has provided a home-away-from-home for so any families throughout the years!

Proceeds from the sale of the Callaway County property will go a long way towards helping us fulfill our mission to "lift children and families to a better tomorrow." This donation is one of the largest donations that we have ever received. We are very grateful for Ms. Kimball's generosity.

A Clever Concept
Members of University of Missouri-Columbia's Kappa Alpha fraternity and Delta Gamma sorority presented RMHC-MM with McDonald themed characters from their Homecoming 2000 house decorations. These pomped characters include Ronald McDonald, Hamburglar, Grimace and the Fry-Guy among others. They will serve as cheerful decorations at many of our upcoming events.

Volunteer in the Spotlight...Jerry Weiman!
For many months Jerry Weiman has commuted from Burlington, IA to his job in Columbia, MO. Though he was only in town a few days a week, Jerry found the time in his busy schedule to volunteer with Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) since 1999. Jerry has been part of the RMHC Speakers Bureau and often ventured out into the community to speak with various civic groups and school children. Jerry could also be found volunteering at the Ronald McDonald Family Room at University Hospital's Children's Hospital. Of his volunteer experience, Jerry said "It makes my week complete!"

Being of service, helping people and giving back to the community were all reasons why Jerry began volunteering with RMHC. He explained that hearing the stories of families was one of his favorite parts of volunteering. Jerry had this to say about his time with RMHC, "You go away with mixed emotions. On one hand you're sad for what they (RMHC families) are going through, but on the other they lift you up because of their outlook and support of one another." He also said that the experiences he has had at RMHC will stay with him for years to come.

Recently Jerry informed us that he will be pursuing a professional opportunity closer to home. Though we are very sad to see him go, we wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

Spring Fundraisers Do Wonders

Back-to-Back Bees
Things were really buzzing this Spring around RMHC! Together our two annual Spelling Bees raised over $34,000 for RMHC to help families of hospitalized children.

The Lenoir Community Center served as host for the Columbia Spelling Bee. While enjoying a delicious luncheon, audience members were able to watch and cheer as 15 teams battled it out to see who the "Top Bee" would be. After several rounds, the McDonald's team from Rock Bridge High School was victorious by correctly spelling the work "pertinacious."

The Capital City Bee took place at the Ramada Inn in Jefferson City. Ten teams spelled and spelled until only two teams were left. With the word "thanatology" the Capital Region Medical Center team, comprised of Helias High School students, took the trophy.

The success of these events was due to the generosity of U.S. Cellular, our title sponsor, Boone County National Bank, Capital Region Medical Center, Jefferson Bank, KFRU, KLIK, KRCG, Lenoir Community Center, McDonald's, Missouri Employers Mutual Insurance, and to the many other sponsors, donors and volunteers who gave their energies and resources to help the families of Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Golf Tournament
On a breezy, balmy day in April, more than 100 golfers took part in the Third Annual RMHC Golf Tournament. Columbia Country Club played host for this fabulous event that raised almost $12,000 for the Charity.

Sponsored by generous businesses such as KMIZ, McDonald's Socket, and U.S. Cellular the day proved to be fun for all! Players came from throughout the Midwest to play in the tournament and support families of children receiving medical care for their illnesses and injuries. Congratulations to our trophy winners Jon Sundvold, Randy Harper, Charlie Gibbens and Terry Thornsbury.

Many thanks to Bley & Pfeiffer - Attorneys at Law, UMB Bank and our other donors whose generosity helped make this day such a success!

A Birthday Shared
Birthdays are fun and full of love. Andrew McCarney shared his ninth birthday with RMHC. When he and his mom, Michelle Jackson, sent out invitations to his birthday party, they included a copy of our Wish List and asked that people bring donations for the Charity to Andrew's party. They also had the clever idea of using tab houses as "goodie bags" to hold treats from the party in an effort to get other children and their families involved in helping RMHC. This family shows that even young children can make a big difference in the lives of others!

Lincoln's Lift Off
On a cold day last December, 500 colorful balloons were launched from the back of Lincoln's new fire engine to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mid-Missouri. Each balloon contained a coupon for a free happy meal redeemable at Warsaw's McDonald's Restaurant. For each coupon turned in, $5 was donated to Ronald McDonald House Charities. One-hundred-ninety-three coupons were redeemed and $965 was raised.

Record Breaking Year
Missouri Boulevard Touchless Car Wash broke records this year for its annual charity car wash. For each car washed during this three day event, $2 was donated to RMHC. In this, its ninth year, the event raised over $1,000. This event was sponsored by KATI Country 94.3 and KWOS. Jefferson City McDonald's owner/operators donated gift certificates to be given to each customer.

"Kids Helping Kids"
This fall the Chaos Car Club presented a donation in the amount of $1,800 to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Mid-Missouri. The theme of this special event was "Kids Helping Kids." Area youth washed numerous cars to fund a car show. Proceeds from the car show benefited RMHC. This project stemmed from a father's desire for his sons to undertake a project that would benefit others instead of just "cruising around" in their free time. The car show participants have received letters of commendation from all over the country.

Around the House in 2001
